The format for the first Central Coast Section competition in soccer for girls included five league champions and three at-large selections. Woodside, with one loss, was a slight favorite.

Kathy Case scored the decider between the two De Anza League foes, running onto a Mara Peck corner and pushing it into the goal with 17 minutes remaining. Saratoga’s first goal came on a Peck corner also, hitting a Monta Vista defender and bounding into the net. Freshman Allison McCargo scored for Monta Vista.

1979
With the addition of the West Valley League, the format was changed, bringing together six league champions and two at-large selections. Three teams went into the playoffs undefeated -- Monta Vista, Silver Creek and Prospect.

Allison McCargo’s goal on a direct kick in the 93rd minute (Three minutes into the fifth overtime period) broke a deadlock and gave the Matadors the win. Nicki Barnes provided Monta Vista with a 1-0 edge in the 17th minute but Laurie Bowman’s unassisted scored in the 53rd minute tied it until McCargo’s decider.

1980
Seven league champions (the Girls Private Schools League became the newest addition) and one at-large choice made up the field for the fourth annual event. Unbeaten Palo Alto was the pre-tourney favorite.

Controlled midfield play and the goaltending of Meiling Yee paced the Vikings to their 19th victory without a loss. Mary Schonher scored P.A.’s first goal five minutes into the match on an assist from Lisa Jack. The latter tallied at the 22-minute mark and Kathy Naughton closed out the half with a score at 38 minutes.

1981
There was no change in the format -- seven league champions and one at-large pick. Undefeated Saratoga and defending champion Palo Alto were the pre-playoff favorites.

Freshman sweeper Julie Taylor turned back Palo Alto’s continued offensive thrusts and the shutout produced the win for Saratoga. The only score occurred late in the first half when Jenell Winningham got off a shot that was deflected by a Palo Alto defender and bounced into the goal.

1982
The format was changed. Champions and runnersup from six leagues qualified (GPSL dropped out) so the field was increased to 12 teams with four teams given first round byes. Palo Alto and Saratoga were the two top seeds.

The two soccer powers battled for 100 minutes -- 80 of regulation and four five-minute overtimes -- and were declared co-champions. Strong defensive lines by both teams provided the scoreless outcome. Palo Alto finished 18-0-2 while Saratoga ended up 17-1-1.

1983
The format was changed with champions and runnersup from seven leagues (GPSL rejoined). Two teams received first-round byes. Undefeated Saratoga was the pre-playoff favorite.

Janet Taylor stole the ball and rocketed a left-side shot into the net with three minutes gone in the second half to provide all the scoring. Saratoga, which finished with a perfect record and its third straight CCS title, had a strong effort from Janet’s sister, Julie.

1984
The format was changed again with champions and runnersup from eight leagues (Christian Schools League was added) qualifying. Saratoga, Gunn and Leland were all undefeated going into the championship tourney.

Kelly Rogers headed in a crossing pass with 2:30 left in the second overtime that broke a scoreless deadlock and deprived Saratoga of at least a share of four consecutive CCS titles. Mitty goalkeeper Tiffany Cornelius had an outstanding match, stopping two apparent Saratoga goals. Rogers’ goal came on a cross from Sue Grigsby.

1985
The format remained the same with champions and runnersup from eight leagues qualifying. Leland and defending champion Mitty each entered the playoffs with a single defeat.

Brandi Chastain scored Mitty’s only goal in regulation and assisted on an overtime goal to pace the Monarchs to their second straight title. After Chastain had missed a penalty kick that would have knotted the score, she muscled her way past two defenders with 13 minutes left and hit a low shot into the corner. Kris Kleinheiz produced the winning goal when she rolled a shot under the keeper early in over-time. Karen Beckner scored the clinching goal on a pass from Chastain.

1986
The format changed with champions and runnersup from nine leagues (Santa Cruz Coast League joined the field) qualifying, increasing the field to 18 teams. Defending champion Mitty was the undefeated favorite going into the tourney, but Palo Alto and Santa Teresa had lost only to Mitty.

For the second consecutive year Mitty defeated Monta Vista by two goals in overtime for the championship. Karen Beckner scored the winning goal early in overtime on a pass from Kerry Stivaletti. Mitty star Brandi Chastain, whose long throw-in to Debbie Norbutas resulted in the first goal, tallied the clincher. It was Mitty’s 37th consecutive match without a defeat.

1987  D I  D II
The format was changed with two divisions being created. The champions and runnersup from six leagues competed in Division I with three leagues’ two top teams competing in Division II. Santa Teresa was undefeated in Division I while Presentation of San Jose was perfect in Division II going into the championship tournament.

Stacy Ball scored three goals to lead the un-defeated Saints. She scored the first after picking up a defender’s mistake. Her second made it 3-0 after Nicole Haggerty blasted in a 25-yarder. Ball’s third goal was much like the first, picking up on a defend-er’s mistake.

Frosh Kristen Marfil scored twice to pace Mitty to the championship. The Monarchs had to defeated two previously undefeated teams in the semifinals and final to return to the throne after a year’s absence. Mitty scored its third goal on a header by Michelle Rootsaert.

Hillsdale went into the playoffs undefeated while Presentation of San Jose, Santa Teresa and Los Gatos each had a single loss.

Amy Hargrove’s shot from the right side of the penalty box near the end of the first 10-minute over-time gave the fourth-seeded Mustangs the title. It was Hargrove’s first goal of the season.

It was the third victory of the season by identical 1-0 scores for Presentation of San Jose in the battle of two Santa Teresa League schools. The only goal was on a penalty kick by Tracy Giorgetti midway through the second half.

The format remained the same with the champions and runnersup from nine leagues qualifying along with six third-place teams. The field was split into two divisions of 12 teams based on enrollment, the larger being Division I. Los Gatos was the top seed in Division I and St. Francis in Division II.

Undaunted by two losses to Los Gatos earlier in the season, Homestead defended its Division I title when Kristin Kempe scored in the 64th minute. Martina Holan put the winners ahead 1-0 early on a header. Los Gatos tied the score on Brita Zoellner’s goal off a deflected ball. The ensuing kickoff was floated into the goal mouth and when misplayed by the goalkeeper, Kempe booted it home.

Junior midfielder Molly Poncetta of St. Francis scored twice, the second with about six seconds remaining in the final overtime on a penalty kick to create the tie. Julene Pena scored first for Present-ation and Poncetta equalized 10 minutes from the end of regulation with a shot from the right wing. Early in the first overtime, Mikka Hansen put Presentation ahead again, but Poncetta’s penalty after an illegal handling call created the co-championship.

Although the qualifying was different due to league realignments, the format remained basically the same with two divisions of 13 teams each (based on enrollment). Los Gatos was the top seed in Division I and St. Francis in Division II.

Freshman Jennifer Medina curled a 25-yard free kick into the upper corner in the second overtime to provide the Lancers with the win. St. Francis scored an own goal early in the second half but Presentation equaled on Julie Williams’ header from Amy Balavac’s corner kick 23 minutes before regulation time.

The only goal was scored six minutes into the second half on Stacey Mallison's left-footer from the right side of the net after a pass from Natalie Stuhl-mueller. Leigh, which had lost to Los Gatos in last year's finals also, had a good chance to equalize late in the second half but did not convert.

Los Altos scored on Kasey Clark shot in the 29th minute and then turned back Presentation time and time again to claim the title.  Clark intercepted an attempted clearing kick and immediately fired the ball into the goal for what turned out to be the winning score.   Both teams played excellent defense the rest of the way.  It was Presentation's first loss of the season.

The format changed slightly with 28 teams qualifying and being divided into two divisions of 14 teams based on enrollment. Leigh was seeded No. 1 in Division I and Presentation in Division II.

Junior midfielder Hita Jassani-Azad marked Aly Wagner, Presentation’s star, out of the game.

Duncan chased down a pass from teammate Michelle Gray in the penalty area and fired the ball into the net on the first shot of the game. Haggerty’s goal came on a pass from Melissa McMorrow.

Anna Kraus scored one goal and assisted on another as St. Francis won easily. Kraus delivered a superb 21-yard free kick into the upper corner of the net, well beyond the goalkeeper’s reach for the first goal in the 10th minute. Kraus then delivered a pass to Kati McBain in the opening seconds of the second half and McBain buried a left-footed shot in the back of the net. St. Francis, which has won two straight CCS titles, scored the clincher in the 74th minute when Kristi Candau got clear on a breakaway.

All-American Aly Wagner scored two goals, the final one on a solo run from midfield in which she weaved through four defenders and then cut to her left in front of the goalkeeper for the shot. The Presen-tation goalkeeper did not touch the ball until the closing minutes of the game. Wagner gave the winners a 1-0 lead at the 20-minute mark on a free kick. Danielle Slaton, also an All-America selection, scored the other goal.

Sophomore Kate Morgan scored a spectacular goal in the 53rd minutes to give her team the title along with an undefeated season (two ties) and the first-ever victory over Presentation. The two schools, both from the BVL Mt. Hamilton Division, had drawn twice during the regular season. Presentation beat Mitty, 3-0, for the 1998 championship. Morgan stole the ball from a Panthers defender outside the penalty box, beat another in the area and finished with a 12-yard shot into the left corner of the net.

goalkeeeper. Livia Baldaccini made it 2-0 in the 54th minute, taking a cross and finishing
from two yards out. Katie Mason capped the scoring in the 59th minute.

0-0 halftime standoff, the Monarchs scored on all three of their second half shots to prevail.
Mitty took the lead in the 56th minute when a long kick went through the keeper's hands and
landed in front of Heidi Spink who scored in a scramble. Three minutes later, the Monarchs
struck again as Mari Gomes converted a close-range shot off a Kate Morgan's corner kick.
Gomes added an insurance goal in the 78th minute off assists by Spink and Jacquelyn Bettencourt.

The lowly regarded Saints completed their unlikely run through the playoffs
by nipping top-seeded Aptos.  Senior Kelly Gullion made a sliding shot into
an empty net after the keeper blocked a hard free kick by Judy Coffman
but was unable to hold onto the ball.  The Mariners didn't have many dangerous
scoring opportunities.

Mitty dominated the game from the start, allowing no shots on goal by
St. Ignatius in the first half.  In the 30th minute, the Monarchs broke
through when Carmen Padilla passed to Mari Gomes who then chipped
the ball over the St. Ignatius goalkeeper.  Mitty scored its second goal
in the 65th minute as Kate Maczevic passed to Heidi Spink who ripped
a shot into the back of the net.

 Leland took an early-goal lead but the Acorns scored late in regulation time and after four scoreless overtime sessions, a co-championship was declared. The Chargers’ Valerie Huffman’s scored from 18 yards in the ninth minute but Live Oak equalized in minute 71 on a goal by Bridgette Bonfiglio after a corner kick was headed to her by Lena Marsh. Brothers John and Tony Vasquez were coaches of the respective teams.

    The victors, who had tied Presentation for the CCS title the previous season, scored twice in the first 15 minutes and avenged their only loss of the season. Mollyrose McBride scored both goals -- a deflection of a corner kick in the 6th minute and a drive off a cross in the 15th. Chioma Igwe set up both goals.

    Freshman forward Ali Cheadle blasted a loose ball from the top of the penalty box with nine minutes remaining in the match to provide the winning margin. She had scored the first goal on a re-directed corner kick. The Cougars had tied the match in the second half on a Britt Boynton goal.

The tigers moved to their third straight Division II title with the easy win over the wildcats. the match was even at halftime but in the 49th minute, a deflected ball bounced by the Los Gatos keeper for an own goal. in the 58th minute, Helen Hooten passed to Selby Foreman who fired in the second goal and Katie Conner knocked in the third goal in the 75th minute by deflcting a pass from Chistine DeMartini.

Mara Fintzi dribled a weaving pattern through three defenders in the penalty area and slotted home what proved to be the winning goal for the Scots. With St. Francis having the game all but locked up, Mitty equaled the score in extra time and then won the match in overtime. After a 0-0 first half, Sara Doyle put St. Francis ahead when she got a shot on an open goal. With the game in stoppage time, defender Veronica Sikora blasted a 20 yarder to tie the score. Liz Moul scored the winner two minutes before the teams would have been declared co- champions by knocking in a loose ball after a corner kick.

    Emily Langston’s goal in overtime decided the battle between two De Anza League foes. After being scoreless in regulation play, Langston controlled a deflected shot with her chest and hammered it into the goal with her left foot. Monta Vista, which had eliminated the Eagles in the 2006 playoffs, was 0-2-1 against the junior-dominated Eagles this season.

    After an early goal by Samira Jaafari ended Valley Christian’s streak of five shutouts, the Monarchs rolled to their ninth CCS championship. Jaafari’s knuckling shot went through the goal keeper and inside the post in the 17th minute. Mitty added to its lead in the 74th minute when Katie Gordon headed in Jenna Brehmer’s corner kick. Mitty won three of the four meetings between the two West Catholic League foes this season.

    Lauren Miller, who could only play on set pieces due to injuries, headed a corner kick by Christian Ruiz into the goal in overtime to give the Cardinals the win over their Santa Cruz Coast League rivals. The two league matches ended in draws and this encounter looked like it might be headed for the same outcome before Miller’s heroics.

Despite losing one of their top goal scorers in the first half due to a knee injury, the Lancers showed their depth in overcoming it and winning the 11th championship for the school. Midfielder Katie Mitchell scored the only goal needed in the 49th minute by blasting a left-footed shot after the ball was headed to her by Maddi Meighan.

The Panthers completed an undefeated season with the relatively easy victory. Jennifer Haggarty crashed the first goal in the 13th minute and in the 61st fired the shot that rebounded to teammate Elizabeth Cook for the clinching score. In 25 matches, the Panthers had only two ties mar their record

After three straight seasons of being the runner-up for the CCS title, the Falcons pulled off a victory that gave the school its first ever CCS championship. Negine Mansour scored the decisive goal midway through the second half.

After advancing to at least the semifinals for three consecutive years, the Matadors finally got their championship. Monta Vista scored in the 11th minute when Shandon Rovetta took a free kick and found Gabby Ley who headed it into the net.  The Matadors went up 2-0 in the 53rd minute as Sandra Ley flicked a throw-in to the front of the goal and Vanessa Fonrey headed it home. Palo Alto pulled a goal back as Kelly Jenks fired a shot from the top of the penalty box but the Vikings could not score again.

The Panthers won their second consecutive title with a convincing win. They scored in the seventh minute as Katie Webb passed to Jennifer Haggarty who withstood a challenge and buried the ball. Burlingame got its other goal in the second half when Allison Daley found the back of the net on an assist from Cassandra Root.

Abby Dahlkemper, a trainee with the U.S. national under-17 team, scored both goals for the Gators. All scoring was done in the first half. Dahlkemper tallied an unassisted goal in the 12th minute and then added another by pouncing on a loose ball in the box after a corner kick. Santa Cruz had evened the game at 1-1 in the 32nd minute on a goal by Ashlee Wilhelmsen.

Lindsay Brownell scored the first goal in the 16th minute and the Lancers added another on an own goal to defeat the Wildcats. Stephanie Bell  sent in a ball to Alexandra Jones, whose shot was stopped by Watsonville goalie Emily Kruger. But Brownell cleaned up the rebound and put the ball in the net. Just before the first half ended, the ball skimmed off the head of a Woodside defender and into the goal for a 2-0 lead.

Aragon senior Rachel Bradley-Haas scored in the second overtime as the Dons forged a tie with the Panthers to share the Division II title. Aragon led 1-0, but Presentation pulled even in the 69th minute. Dons goalie Ashley Lentz blocked Taylor Johnson's penalty kick, but Johnson raced forward to punch in the loose ball. The Panthers went ahead in the first overtime when Maggie von Massenhausen scored on a cross from Cori Jaques.

Forward Carmela Roberts’ chip-in goal in heavy traffic during the 54th minute held up as the game-winner for the Cardinals. Santa Cruz had to endure a multitude of shots for the remainder of the game but pulled off the upset. Ashlee Wilhelmsen was credited with an assist on the goal.

Divisions I through III had 16 teams, Division IV had 15 teams, and Division V had 14 teams. Piedmont Hills (24-3) was seeded No. 1 in Division I, Mitty (25-2) in Division II, Sacred Heart Cathedral (20-6) in Division III, Sacred Heart Prep (22-2) in Division IV, and Pinewood (19-5) in Division V.

Christina Polini paced the Lancers, setting up one goal and scoring another. The sophomore's point-blank header in the 23rd minute was blocked by Mountain View goalie Sarah Benett, but Annie Kingman pounced on the rebound to put the Lancers up 1-0. Polini made it 2-0 in the 44th minute when she caught the Spartans with a quick counter. With only one player to beat, the speedy forward got a step on her mark and blistered a hot shot into the top corner of the cage.

Mitty's Ana Marija Sola scored the only goal, a breakaway strike in the 80th minute that gave the Monarchs their 10th title. Mitty earlier had missed on several great chances, but Sola ended the frustration, outracing two defenders and curling a shot just inside the far post. Mitty goalie Lindsay Mewes posted her 15th shutout of the season.

After Live Oak's Megan Rauschnot put the Acorns up 1-0 in the 50th minute, the Warriors answered two minutes later when Colby Carson fired a free kick into the right-hand corner of the net from 22 yards out. Carson then put the Warriors ahead to stay in the 60th minute after picking up a loose ball near the net and burying it. Rauschnot’s goal was the only one scored against the Warriors in the playoffs.

Stephanie Rebagliati of Mitty scored in the final minute of overtime just seconds after Aragon’s Angela Knowles had put her team ahead and the two schools shared the title. Aragon got on the board first late in the first half as Rachel Killigrew lifted a free kick into the net's upper left corner. Mitty tied it in the 60th minute when midfielder Abigaile Leedeman took a feed from Rebagliati and scored through traffic. The game stayed even until the wild ending.
